Let us take you all the way back to 2006 when Neil was reading Arthur Ransome's 'Swallows And Amazons' as a bedtime story to his daughter. He was also chatting to Director Tom Morris, then at the National Theatre about writing a musical.. It didn't take Neil long to put the two things together and soon he and Tom were working on a musical adaptation of 'Swallows And Amazons' with writer Helen Edmundson.
The musical set sail at the Bristol Old Vic in 2010, winning the hearts of all who came to see it. Neil's songs for the show were described as "his finest work" by the Guardian, and "the show's secret weapon.. wonderful songs" by The Telegraph. The production has since toured the UK, had a West End theatre run and several revivals. The songs from the show have never before been released, but Neil recently unearthed his original 2008 demos for the show, and here they are: 'Swallows And Amazons - The Original Piano Demos'. It comes in a wallet with a cover illustration picked out by Neil from the book he read to his daughter back in 2006. We think it's a beautiful collection of songs, hope you do too.
